For decades, Sir Tom Jones was surrounded by screaming fans, sold-out venues and the temptations that came with extraordinary fame. Yet behind the image of the charismatic Welsh superstar was a complicated love story—one filled with infidelity, forgiveness, regret and a marriage that somehow endured for nearly six decades.
Long before “It’s Not Unusual” transformed Jones into an international sensation in 1965, there was Linda Trenchard. The two had known each other since childhood in Wales and married while still teenagers. Their son, Mark, arrived soon afterward, years before Tom could have imagined the level of fame waiting for him.
Then everything changed.
As Jones traveled the world and became one of music’s most recognizable performers, Linda largely remained away from the spotlight. Tom later spoke remarkably openly about his behavior during those years, admitting that at the height of his fame he had numerous affairs and encounters with other women.
Some relationships became particularly public. His affair with former Miss World Marjorie Wallace created intense attention after the pair were photographed together. Jones later recalled that when Linda learned what had happened, her reaction was furious.
But beneath the anger was something far deeper: a marriage neither of them ultimately walked away from.
“She’s the most important thing in my life,” Jones said years later, describing Linda as the love of his life.
His infidelity also produced consequences that extended beyond his marriage. During a relationship with model Katherine Berkery in the 1980s, Jones fathered a son, Jonathan. A paternity test confirmed that Jones was the father, although the singer and his younger son reportedly did not develop a relationship.
Through scandal, fame and painful revelations, however, Tom and Linda remained married.
That bond ended only when Linda died from cancer in 2016 after 59 years of marriage.
For Jones, losing her changed everything.
In the months following her death, the legendary performer revealed that music had become one of the things keeping him moving forward. Linda, he said, had wanted him to continue performing rather than surrender to grief.
Years later, his words about romance carried a very different tone from the stories surrounding his younger years.
“You’ll never love again,” he said while reflecting on Linda. “There was one love of my life, and that was Linda.”
It was a striking admission from a man once famous almost as much for his romantic reputation as for his powerful voice.
Tom Jones spent decades surrounded by women, fame and temptation. Yet when the crowds grew quieter and the years passed, the person he wished could still be beside him was the girl he had known before any of it existed.
“I’m glad we had our lives together,” he said. “But I wish she was here now. We would be old together.”
Perhaps that is the most bittersweet chapter of Tom Jones’ story: after a lifetime of having almost everything, the one thing he wanted most was something fame could never give back.
