For more than five decades, Richard Sterban’s unmistakable bass voice has been part of the soundtrack of American country music. But today, the legendary Oak Ridge Boys singer is facing a battle far more personal than anything he has encountered onstage — and his message to fans has left the country music community deeply concerned.
Sterban revealed that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, confirming that the diagnosis came in March. The 83-year-old singer, whose booming bass helped define the Oak Ridge Boys’ signature sound, shared the difficult news while also expressing determination and faith about the road ahead.
“In March of this year, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” Sterban said. He explained that he is being treated by leading cancer specialists and remains hopeful that, with excellent medical care and his faith in God, he can overcome the illness.
For generations of fans, Sterban is much more than simply a member of a legendary vocal group. Since joining the Oak Ridge Boys in 1972, his extraordinary low register has become instantly recognizable — especially on the group’s unforgettable 1981 crossover smash “Elvira.” That famous bass refrain became one of country music’s most recognizable moments, helping turn the song into a cultural phenomenon.
Fans had already noticed Sterban’s absence from the group’s current performances. He has reportedly been away from the road since mid-May while focusing on his recovery. Yet even while facing cancer, his thoughts remain with the people who have supported him throughout his remarkable career.
“I want to thank everyone, especially the fans, for your concern, and I would appreciate your continued prayers,” Sterban said. Encouragingly, he added that he feels very good on most days and hopes to return to the road within several months.
That hope carries even greater emotional weight because the Oak Ridge Boys have already endured an extraordinarily painful chapter.
Longtime tenor Joe Bonsall died in 2024 after years of performing alongside Sterban, Duane Allen and William Lee Golden. His passing, combined with other personal losses surrounding the group and their families, left a painful absence inside one of country music’s most enduring brotherhoods.
Still, the Oak Ridge Boys have continued forward, honoring commitments on their American Made Farewell Tour with substitute singers helping carry the music to audiences who have loved them for decades.
Now, however, the spotlight is not on another concert or another farewell performance.
It is on Richard Sterban.
