Introduction:
Sir Cliff Richard has addressed questions about his sexuality publicly for the first time.
The legendary singer, who has never married, has long been the subject of speculation over whether he might be gay. Speaking to Australia’s A Current Affair, he responded candidly when asked about it: “If I were gay, would it make any difference?”
Now 73, Richard—once a teenage heartthrob—admitted that such rumours hurt him when he was younger, especially because of the impact on his family. But today, he says, it no longer matters. “It did hurt when I was young, of course. But who cares now? I have gay friends. Most people do. If I were gay, would you stop coming to my concerts? I hope not.”
Dubbed “Britain’s Elvis” after his 1958 debut hit Move It, Richard has sold over 250 million records worldwide and achieved 14 number-one singles. Still, gossip persisted, partly fuelled by his close friendship with former Catholic priest John McElynn, who helps manage his homes in the UK, Barbados, and Portugal, and once lived with him.
Richard has had romantic relationships with women, including tennis champion Sue Barker, whom he nearly married. In a 2008 Daily Mail interview, he revealed he had only ever been close to proposing twice—once to dancer Jackie Irving, and later to Barker—before realising marriage was not the right path for him.
Reflecting now, Richard believes his demanding career was never suited to the responsibilities of a wife and family. “I just never felt the time was right. I can travel, meet fans everywhere. Marriage is a huge responsibility, and if children are involved, that’s even greater.”
He also laughed off rumours that he had been in love with Olivia Newton-John. “Let’s face it, we all loved Olivia. She had that effect,” he said, recalling her extended appearance on his TV show.
Known as “the Peter Pan of pop” for his youthful appearance, Richard insists he has never had plastic surgery, crediting good genes instead. “Plastic? No. I did try Botox once—it wasn’t for me. But if it works for others, why not? Women wear makeup.”
