For decades, audiences have known Ricky Skaggs as the silver-haired master of the mandolin—a guardian of bluegrass tradition whose music carries the soul of Appalachia. Doctors performed emergency quadruple bypass surgery, a life-saving procedure that came with enormous risks.
Because of strict hospital restrictions, Sharon could not remain at her husband’s bedside. Instead, she turned to faith, rallying family, friends, fellow musicians, and fans in prayer.
The surgery was successful, but recovery proved long and challenging.
Throughout every step of the healing process, Sharon remained by Ricky’s side. In later interviews, he credited her determination and unconditional support for saving his life.
Today, Ricky treasures life’s quiet moments more than ever. He still performs with Kentucky Thunder, but he no longer sees music as a race.
“Every day I wake up with Sharon is a gift,” he once said.
