For decades, Phil Collins seemed almost indestructible. He filled stadiums, dominated radio, collected Grammys, and helped turn Genesis into one of rock’s most recognizable bands. But behind the familiar voice and legendary drum kit, the 75-year-old musician has endured a private health battle so severe that, two years ago, his five children reportedly gathered at his bedside believing they might be saying goodbye for the last time.
Collins has spoken openly about the frightening period that followed years of physical decline and renewed problems with alcohol. After Genesis completed its farewell tour in 2021, he said his drinking became heavier again. What began as daytime drinking eventually collided with a body already weakened by multiple medical problems, leaving the musician in an increasingly dangerous condition.
His health challenges had been building for years. Collins underwent several operations on his knee while also struggling with spinal problems, nerve damage and hearing loss. The physical toll became so serious that the drummer who once powered some of rock’s biggest songs could no longer perform behind the kit as he once had and increasingly relied on assistance to walk.
Then came the crisis that frightened his family most.
By the spring of 2024, Collins’ condition had reportedly deteriorated dramatically. As his organs began struggling, his longtime manager contacted the family because serious decisions surrounding his care might have to be considered. His five children, including actress Lily Collins, came to his bedside as those closest to him feared they were approaching the end.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking detail is that Collins says he remembers little about those visits. While his children were preparing themselves for the possibility of losing their father, he was too ill to fully understand what was happening around him.
Collins ultimately survived, but recovery was anything but quick. He spent months receiving hospital care and has said he now has round-the-clock nursing assistance to help manage his medication. He has also remained away from alcohol since that devastating period, while describing his past struggle as a serious alcohol problem rather than defining himself as an alcoholic.
The experience appears to have changed what matters most to him.
For a man who spent much of his adult life traveling, recording and performing, Collins now speaks about something far simpler: being present for his children. Last year, the family reunited in London for a long weekend filled not with flashing cameras or roaring crowds, but board games, meals, laughter, conversations and tears.
Collins described that gathering as an extraordinary experience. There is also an unmistakable sense that he understands how much family time disappeared while he was touring the world.
The musician who once lived by concert schedules now seems determined to make the remaining chapters count. His message is simple but powerful: he is still here, his children are still beside him, and there are still things he wants to do.
For Phil Collins, perhaps the most meaningful encore of all is no longer happening onstage. It is happening at home.
