Elvis Presley – Blue Hawaii (2009, CD) - Discogs

Introduction:

Hawaiian Sunset, a laid-back ballad with a touch of Hawaiian flair, was released in 1961 by the King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley. The song appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Blue Hawaii, Presley’s second feature film shot in the tropical paradise. Unlike many of the rock and roll numbers that had propelled Presley to superstardom just a few years earlier, Hawaiian Sunset showcased a gentler, more romantic side of the singer.

Blue Hawaii was a critical and commercial success, further solidifying Presley’s status as a major box office draw in addition to his musical dominance. The film itself wasn’t a musical, but music played a central role, with several songs peppered throughout the narrative. These songs were not new recordings, but were culled from Presley’s recent albums, most notably his 1961 release Can’t Help Falling in Love. Hawaiian Sunset was one of the few new recordings created specifically for the film.

While Blue Hawaii’s soundtrack wasn’t quite as earth-shattering as some of Presley’s earlier albums, it did spawn a couple of hit singles. The title track, Can’t Help Falling in Love, became one of Presley’s most recognizable and enduring ballads. Hawaiian Sunset, however, never achieved the same level of chart success. Despite the lack of chart-topping numbers, the soundtrack as a whole was a commercial success, reaching number 5 on the Billboard Top LPs chart.

Hawaiian Sunset may not have been a chartbuster, but it has become a fan favorite over the years. The song’s relaxed and romantic atmosphere perfectly complements the Hawaiian setting of the film Blue Hawaii. The gentle strumming of the ukulele and the smooth, melancholic melody create a dreamy soundscape, while Presley’s signature vocals deliver a heartfelt performance. The song stands as a delightful example of Presley’s ability to deliver ballads with just as much charisma and charm as his high-octane rock and roll anthems.
