Donna recalled that Vernon Presley, Elvis’s father, had considered opening Graceland to fans. Even before Elvis’s death, family members had occasionally allowed visitors through the gates. After Elvis died, Vernon reportedly believed fans should have an opportunity to visit the mansion and pay their respects.
However, Vernon’s health was deteriorating rapidly. Faced with difficult decisions about Graceland and the future of his granddaughter, Lisa Marie Presley, he appointed Priscilla Presley as a trustee. Donna emphasized that, in her account, the decision was made by Vernon himself—not through manipulation or pressure.
According to Donna, Vernon’s primary motivation was protecting Lisa Marie’s financial future and birthright. She described him as a firm and uncompromising man who was not easily influenced, particularly when it came to protecting his son and granddaughter.
What happened afterward, however, became a very different story.
Donna said that as Priscilla became involved in managing Elvis’s legacy and sought advice from business figures, the operation surrounding Graceland gradually developed into something much larger than the family could have imagined. What had initially been intended as a way to preserve Elvis’s home and protect Lisa Marie’s future evolved into a major business enterprise.
For Donna, one of the most painful consequences was the gradual distancing of Elvis’s blood family from Graceland and commemorative events connected to his legacy. She described the exclusion as deeply emotional, particularly because her connection to Elvis was rooted in family, faith, and a lifetime of shared memories.
She also stressed that Vernon’s trusteeship was never intended to last forever. Lisa Marie was expected to assume control when she reached the age of 25. In Donna’s interpretation, the arrangement was therefore a temporary solution created during a period of tremendous uncertainty and loss.
“Would Elvis and Uncle Vernon have wanted Graceland to become what it is today?” Donna asks in her reflection. Her answer is no, arguing that neither man could have imagined family members being separated from a place that had once been their home and gathering place.
Still, Donna says her purpose is not bitterness but clarity. Behind the public image of Graceland lies, in her telling, a deeply personal family story—one shaped by grief, difficult decisions, changing circumstances, and enduring love for Elvis Presley.
