Introduction:
At 81 years old, Sir Cliff Richard has issued a deeply moving tribute following the passing of his longtime friend and “soulmate,” Olivia Newton-John, who died on Monday after a long battle with breast cancer. In a public statement filled with warmth and sorrow, the legendary singer opened his heart to the world, reflecting not only on their final conversation but also on the impact Olivia left behind.
“I find myself at a loss as to what to say,” Cliff admitted. “Death—well, he is a vicious enemy. And all of us will be taken by him. But all of us are not taken by him at the same time. And so, while Olivia remains in our minds and memories, she remains very much alive.”
For Cliff, Olivia’s presence was far more than that of a fellow star. He described himself as “just one of an army of lucky people who knew and loved Olivia.” With touching simplicity, he asked, “How could we not love her?” To him, she was the embodiment of grace—“gorgeous, gifted, and with a heart of gold.”
The singer also honored Olivia’s strength and resilience in her decades-long fight against cancer. Diagnosed three times since 1992, Olivia chose not to step back from life but to turn her personal struggle into inspiration for millions of others. “Why?” Cliff reflected. “Because she wanted to inspire other sufferers to do as she did—fight the ugly disease.” Even so, he recalled her own humility: she never liked the word “battle.” Instead, Olivia once said she simply had “something she wanted to get rid of.”
Cliff shared that only three weeks before her passing, he had spoken with Olivia on the phone. True to her character, she remained cheerful and radiant, never letting illness dim her spirit. “I never thought for one moment that I would be writing this and acknowledging her death,” he confessed. Yet even in his grief, Cliff sought gentler words. “I hate the word death,” he wrote. “I would instead like to acknowledge that Olivia simply stopped living.”
Their friendship, which spanned decades, was marked by music, laughter, and mutual admiration. Olivia had once appeared regularly on Cliff’s variety show, and the two performed duets together that remain cherished by fans. He fondly remembered the early years when he, like so many others, was captivated by her charm. In his autobiography, The Dreamer, Cliff confessed that “many of us were in love with Olivia.” She eventually became engaged to Bruce Welch, Cliff’s bandmate from The Shadows, though the relationship ended before marriage. With wistful honesty, Cliff once admitted, “I’m afraid I lost the chance.”
Now, as the world mourns the loss of the beloved Grease star, Sir Cliff Richard speaks for countless admirers when he says: “I will miss her. The world will miss her. So let’s all keep her alive in our hearts and memories. God bless you, Livy. Rest in peace.”
