Cliff Richard has revealed that he has never experienced heartbreak, simply because he has never truly been in love. While many might assume that a life in the spotlight would bring whirlwind romances, the singer explained that he has never allowed himself to fall deeply enough for anyone to break his heart. For him, relationships have remained light and free of the emotional entanglements that often lead to pain. Sir Cliff, 80, who dated Sue Barker and Una Stubbs, said the experience had passed him by.

The Living Doll singer said: “Otherwise, I would have got married. You have got to be certainly strongly in, decidedly in love with someone to have it (your heart) broken.”

Sir Cliff, who once said he nearly proposed to A Question of Sport’s Sue in the 1980s, quit chasing love to seek fame.

The star, who dated Una in 1963, said it came after he was told having a girlfriend would lose him female fans.

Sir Cliff, also rumoured to have dated Olivia Newton-John in 1980, said: “Having struggled by for a few years to make it work, and then wanting longevity, I’m afraid my career took over.”

He won a privacy case against the BBC over coverage of a raid on his home in 2014.
