We cannot reconstruct its emotional meaning from a title alone. What survives is a small, specific intersection of his domestic and creative lives: his daughter’s name appearing in the record of music he was preparing during her first year.

Produced by Bruce Welch of The Shadows, the single was released in July 1979. Within weeks, it became a sensation. In August, “We Don’t Talk Anymore” reached No. 1 in Britain and remained there for four weeks. It also became a major international success, reaching No. 7 on America’s Billboard Hot 100. For longtime fans, it was a thrilling reminder of Cliff’s extraordinary talent. For younger listeners, it was an introduction to an artist whose career had begun before many of them were born.
