Elvis Presley Had Millions of Admirers — But One Fellow Singer Became the Friend He Could Truly Trust
Elvis Presley was surrounded by millions of fans, Hollywood legends, and an entourage that rarely left his side. Yet behind the gates, the security, and the mythology of being “The King,” genuine friendship was surprisingly difficult to find. According to longtime confidant Jerry Schilling, one fellow performer stood apart from almost everyone else: Tom Jones.
Their friendship began in Hollywood in 1965, when Jones was visiting Paramount Studios during his first major American promotional tour. Elvis was nearby filming Paradise, Hawaiian Style and, after hearing Jones was on the lot, reportedly asked to meet him.
What happened next immediately broke through the usual Hollywood formalities.
As Jones approached, Elvis began singing one of the Welsh star’s own songs. It was playful, spontaneous, and deeply flattering. Elvis had already been listening to Jones and recognized something in his powerful voice.
Soon, the two men were talking about what mattered most to them: singing, performance, gospel, and the music that had shaped their lives.
But their connection became more than professional admiration.
Jones later recalled private nights when he and Elvis would sit with guitars, singing and talking away from managers, audiences, and cameras. No famous stage. No screaming crowd. Just two extraordinary singers enjoying music together.
That may explain why the friendship mattered so much to Elvis.
For much of his life, Elvis existed inside an intensely protected world. He admired artists such as Jackie Wilson and Roy Orbison, but admiration did not necessarily mean personal access. His inner circle guarded him closely, and few entertainers were allowed beyond that invisible barrier.
Jones was different.
Priscilla Presley later offered a revealing observation about their relationship, recalling that she had rarely seen Elvis so relaxed around another artist. Around Jones, Elvis seemingly didn’t need to prove that he was the biggest star in the room.
Las Vegas strengthened their bond. Elvis watched Jones perform at the Flamingo in 1968, studying his stage presence as Elvis prepared to return to live performance himself. During the 1970s, backstage visits, hotel-suite gatherings and phone conversations continued as both men became major Vegas headliners.
Photographs from the era capture something striking: not two celebrities carefully posing for publicity, but two men who appeared genuinely comfortable together.
Their friendship continued until Elvis died on August 16, 1977.
Decades later, Jones has remained connected to the Presley family, maintaining a friendship with Priscilla and continuing to speak warmly about Elvis.
Perhaps the most moving part of their story, however, is what history cannot replay.
Those private conversations and late-night songs were never preserved for millions of fans. There were no phones recording every second, no cameras waiting for content.
And maybe that is precisely what made those moments precious.
For a man who spent nearly his entire adult life performing for the world, Tom Jones may have given Elvis something fame could never provide — a place where “The King” could simply be Elvis.
