How Amy Grant’s Bike Accident Saved Her Voice

How Amy Grant's Bike Accident Saved Her Voice | Jesus Calling #Recovery #Faith

Introduction:

For decades, Amy Grant’s music has carried listeners through love, faith, family, and change. But behind the familiar voice was a woman quietly learning one of life’s hardest lessons: nothing stays the same forever. Now, as she reflects on aging, losing her parents, surviving a frightening bicycle accident, and making new music, Grant is sharing a deeply personal truth about what remains when life suddenly takes away the things we once depended upon.

Her new album of original material, The Me That Remains, arrives after years filled with experiences that reshaped her understanding of time. Among the most painful was watching both of her parents endure different forms of dementia. Her mother died in 2011, while her father lived until 2018, gradually losing much of the language and independence that had once defined him.

Grant admits there are moments from those years she wishes she could revisit. She remembers becoming irritated when her father gave her directions along a road they had traveled countless times. Only later did she understand what was happening: he was saying aloud the things he was still able to remember.

That realization stayed with her.

It taught Grant to look differently at human vulnerability—not as something that suddenly arrives in old age, but as part of the changing nature of every life. Her own experience made that lesson even more personal in 2022, when a serious bicycle accident left her facing months of uncertainty.

Amy Grant says doctor’s blunt advice after traumatic brain injury changed her life

During her recovery, Grant stepped away from screens and spent long stretches quietly writing at a picnic table. She called the practice “writing to remember.” Her balance was affected, her memory required new strategies, and returning to music was far from effortless. She began writing everything down, setting alarms for ordinary tasks, and accepting that the mind and body sometimes require us to live differently than before.

Then came another unexpected turn. The accident eventually led doctors to discover a pre-existing cyst affecting her vocal cords, resulting in surgery in early 2023. What initially seemed potentially catastrophic became, in Grant’s eyes, another reminder that even frightening chapters can contain unexpected gifts.

More than three years after the accident, she says recovery has remained a gradual process. Yet music continues to call her back.

Grant still looks around the curtain before concerts and marvels that people have chosen to spend their time with her. Whether the audience contains thousands or just one person, she wants to give them everything she has.

And perhaps that is what The Me That Remains ultimately represents. It isn’t simply an album about growing older. It is about deciding what deserves our limited time, forgiving ourselves for what we didn’t understand before, and treating one another with greater compassion.

Because Grant has learned something no chart position or award could teach her: if we are still breathing, our story is still being written.
