Marty often jokes that “the apple never falls far from the tree,” a sentiment that perfectly captures his relationship with his father, Merle Haggard. Yet while Merle’s musical influence shaped him, Marty credits another family member with laying the foundation for the man he would become—his grandmother.
“Grandma Haggard was Jesus in a skirt,” Marty says affectionately.
During a turbulent period when Merle was building his career and family circumstances changed, Marty and his siblings were largely raised by their grandmother. Her unwavering faith, compassion, and quiet strength became a guiding force in his life.
“She taught me everything she taught him,” Marty reflects.

His grandmother, he recalls, was immensely proud when he fully embraced his relationship with God. Their shared faith became an unbreakable bond that transcended everything else.
Family remains central to Marty’s life today. He speaks warmly about his close relationship with country music artist Leona Williams, whom he affectionately calls “Mama Lee” or “Mama Junior.” She, in turn, refers to him as her “bonus son.”
Humor and love have helped Marty navigate the unique dynamics of life in a legendary musical family.
But perhaps the greatest turning point in his life came unexpectedly.
In the late 1980s, just as his career was gaining momentum and industry recognition, Marty was involved in a devastating head-on collision that nearly ended everything. The accident left him with severe memory loss, and for years he struggled to regain his footing.
By the time he recovered, much of the momentum behind his career had disappeared.
Yet Marty holds no bitterness.
Instead, he describes the accident as “the best thing that never happened” to him.
While many artists chase fame, Marty discovered that celebrity was never his true goal. He loves music, but he never wanted to live life “in a fishbowl.”
The accident reshaped his priorities, deepened his faith, and gave him a new perspective on success.
Today, Marty shares a unique bond with others who grew up in the shadows of country music legends, including close friends like Dion Pride, Michael Twitty, and Georgette Jones.

“I can’t take credit for the gospel,” he says. “It was given to me freely, and I will share it freely.”
